SOLITAIRE – Not just a card game

 For several days now, I have been playing solitaire on my mobile phone and sometimes on my tablet. It was my way of avoiding boredom and depression. A way to busy myself while hoping that one of these days that I’d get call of good news on any of the hundreds of job applications I sent. Life has a way of testing one’s patience and forbearance. That’s another story.

Particularly today though, I find myself humming in my mind the song of the Carpenters – SOLITAIRE. So, I decided to take a closer look at the lyrics of the song. 

There was a man
A lonely man
Who lost his love
Through his indifference

It is regretful that when a person is lonely, the person becomes indifferent about and on almost everything around the person. Most painful of which is because of one’s loneliness and indifference, the person loses one’s capacity to sincerely love.

A heart that cared
That went unshared
Until it died
Within his silence 

The once caring person is gone as a result of one’s aloneness and loneliness. Depression is a “killer” – of a person who was once so vibrant with life…so full of love…a person for others. Unfortunately, no one really understood the person’s “silence” so instead of journeying with the person, the others withdraw at the pretense of allowing the person some space. Learn to hear the cry of a lonely person in the silence of the person’s reality.

And solitaire's the only game in town
And every road that takes him
Takes him down
And by himself it's easy to pretend
He'll never love again

The person’s desire to hang on and takes the journey of healing turns out to be the most difficult and frustrating process the person has to experience. Trying every means to hang on seemed to be futile. The person smiles but deep inside was a cry of despair so loud that no one heard. And that was the beginning of the person not wanting to love and care again.

And keeping to himself he plays the game
Without her love
It always ends the same
While life goes on around him everywhere
He's playing solitaire

The person goes into seclusion in the person’s inner self. The person may seem to be “Okay” as the person continues to live a regular life’s routine. Deep inside the person, is an isolation that was never felt before. Amidst laughter around, tears abound inside. Amidst the noise of a joyful community, only the sound of the person’s crying inside echoes in the person’s heart. 

A little hope
Goes up in smoke
Just how it goes
Goes without saying

The tiny bit of sunshine’s ray vanished in the thick cloud of sorrow. Did anyone really ever care, the person asked. No one heard.

There was a man
A lonely man
Who would command
The hand he's playing

In the state of deep loneliness, the person realizes that he was just alone. How the game is played is all up to the person. A decision needs to be done…by and for the person’s self.

 The song ends:

And solitaire's the only game in town
And every road that takes him
Takes him down
While life goes on around him everywhere
He's playing solitaire

For someone who loved and lost, solitaire is not just a game.

Silence is Golden

  Silence is Golden (November 22, 2023) In a world of advance technology and science, amidst the popularity of the use of various social media, and in every nook and cranny of the metropolis, silence is indeed golden. Noise pollution has become an accepted norm of daily living, and continuous movements of people and things around has become the core of progress. More and more cities have become like a “city that never sleeps.” To rest and be quiet even for just a few minutes has become a luxury in man’s daily living.   The world’s three major religions – Christianity, Judaism, and Islam – have emphasized the value of silence in their Holy Books – the Bible, the Torah, the Quran, as well as noted scholars and teachers of different faiths have written and/or spoken about it. “God’s will for me is to live an honorable life that should silence ignorant people.   CALLED TO BE HEALERS TO ONE ANOTHER (January 26, 2024)   Reflection on the Gospel (Mark 1:29-39)   Question: Why did Peter deny knowing Jesus three times? Answer: Because Peter was so mad at Jesus for healing his other in-law.   Of course, that was only a joke. It was a joke revolving around the relationship between in-laws. Jesus healed the mother in-law of Peter from fever. The succeeding parts of the Gospel, Jesus continued with his ministry of healing – casting away demons, curing people from various illnesses and diseases, and many more. At the end of the day, Jesus came to a secluded place to pray and commune with His Father in heaven. Then immediately after dawn, Jesus begun his healing miracles and preaching.   We see, however, that at the end of the day, and even before the sun rises at dawn, Jesus come to a place to pray.
