METANOIA

(July 31, 2023)

Metanioa comes from the Greek word μετάνοια “afterthought, repentance” (https://www.etymonline.com>word).

In Christian theology, it is means “a transformative change of heart; especially a spiritual conversion”. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metanoia_(theology)

In Judaism, Philo Judaeus, a Hellenistic Jewish Philosopher (c. 25 BC – c. 50 AD) depicted metanoia as "in heaven, a beautiful and especially good daughter of the Most High." There, "she entreats God Most High hourly" on behalf of people. Philo - Wikipedia

In Islam, there is no exact reference to metanoia but the concept of a change of heart is known as “purification of the soul” (tazkiyyat an-nafs). In Surah Ash-Shams 91:9-10, Allah said: قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّاهَا وَقَدْ خَابَ مَن دَسَّاهَا He has succeeded who purifies the soul, and he has failed who corrupts the soul. All three great religions of Abrahamic faith treat METANOIA as an essential aspect of a person’s life. Without which a person cannot consider himself/herself a good human being is one does not possess a transformed heart and soul.

Metanoia is a change of mind, heart, and soul. As a person realizes one’s sinfulness, he seeks repentance and forgiveness not only to the Almighty but also to other fellow human beings especially those who were wronged and treated badly. Metanoia entails a radical change that involves both the seeking and granting of forgiveness involving God, others, and the person him/herself. Metanoia is a transformative conversion for the better.
